Died in 1988 at 27 by an heroine overdosis Jean-Michelle Basquiat would today be 57 years old. He was one of the first graffiti artists to spread his poetry over the walls of NYC and one of the most important precursors of Modern Urban Art. He used to sign his earliest urban works with a Crown and the tag “Samo”. Son of an Haitian and a Puerto Rican he had a fulminant career since Andy Warhol discovered his talent.
Often criticized by the art system for his quick success and for his problems with drugs, Basquiat still created a new genre in art with his expressive and primitive paintings. In 1996 the director and fellow artist Julian Schnabel did an amazing biopic movie on him.
